Did you know that women globally occupy less than a third of senior and middle management positions, despite making up nearly half of the workforce? Achieving Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) goes beyond ensuring equal rights; it’s about dismantling systemic barriers, empowering women, and creating inclusive environments where everyone can thrive.
SDG 5 aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. Despite progress, significant challenges remain. For instance, according to UN Women, 49 countries still lack laws protecting women from domestic violence, and women do 2.6 times more unpaid care and domestic work than men, limiting their opportunities for education, employment, and leadership.
Gender inequality in leadership is particularly stark. Equilap’s study explains that women hold only 23.7% of parliamentary seats worldwide, and the private sector isn’t much better. In Hong Kong, for example, female board representation lags behind countries like Australia and New Zealand, where nearly one-third of board members are women.
The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated these disparities, with women disproportionately affected by job losses and increased caregiving responsibilities. To achieve SDG 5 by 2030, we must address these root causes and create pathways for women to succeed in all spheres of life.
At Spark Social, we are committed to driving gender equality in the workplace and beyond. Through partnerships with organizations and inspiring leaders, we’ve launched initiatives to empower women, break down barriers, and foster inclusive environments.
One of our standout collaborations is with Christina Chia, President of WCEI Victoria. Christina’s journey—from being a single mother moving to Australia to becoming a respected business and community leader—is a testament to the resilience and strength of women. As a keynote speaker at the 2024 FCEM World Congress, her story inspires countless others to overcome challenges and pursue leadership roles.
We’ve also highlighted initiatives like the Women in the Sustainable Economy (WISE) Initiative. WISE focuses on enhancing women’s access to employment, training, and leadership roles in green and blue industries, sectors historically underrepresented by women.
